Blocking Blocking is the biggest part of defense in volleyball. When the opposing team hits the ball, the front row of your team can try and block the ball from coming over to your side. When blocking, it is very important to remember to have your hands spread out as large as they can be and for your arms to be extended as far as possible. The first step to blocking is to line your nose up with the incoming ball. Line yourself up before the opposing hitter makes contact with the ball. When the opposing hitter does make contact jump straight up as high as you can and try to line your hands up so they restrict the ball from going onto your side. When mid block, push your hands towards the ball but be careful not to hit the net.
