Hitting or Spiking When starting position yourself so that you are on the far left side of the court, about 2 feet off of it but still lined up with line that is painted ten feet from the net. Angle yourself so that you are facing the setter, or where the net meets the court on the right side. Next you must do your approach. In the approach, you take your first step with your left foot about one and a half feet from your starting position. Take your step towards the net straight in front of you. While mid-step move your arms from your side to out in front of you so that your armpits form ninety degree angles. Next, take your second step with your right foot and put it about one and a half feet from your net and about one foot in front of your left foot. Make sure it is almost parallel with the net. During this step swing your arms from in front of you to down by your side. Your last step is with your left foot. Put your left foot about a half a foot from your right foot and facing the same direction. In mid step swing your arms from by your side to behind your back. When swinging your arms, you want to do it in a fast motion to build up momentum to jump higher. After you take your last step, bend your knees, swing your arms up over your head and jump. Retract your arm so that you are touching your ear and snap it very rapidly at the ball. When you are swinging for the ball you want to make the motion similar to buckling your seatbelt. When you’ve made contact with the ball, snap your wrist downward to get the quick down motion of the ball.
